Meeting the Challenge of Rural-to-Urban Mobilization and International Migration
One of the key programs of the THP is the Big Cities Initiative, which seeks to take up the issue of migration, mobility and inclusion in major urban areas across the globe. Under this initiative, the THP holds conferences and workshops to build awareness of the multiple ways in which refugees, migrants and other displaced persons add value to societies, and likewise seeks to gather the most innovative ideas regarding citizenship. The series of fora and consultations are preparatory to the "Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD)", to be held in Manila in October 2008.
The AIM Policy Center, in partnership with the Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Legal Services (IDEALS), a member institution of the THP, and with the support of the League of Cities in the Philippines (LCP), hosted a dialogue-consultation meeting between HRH Prince Constantijn of The Netherlands and chief executives of key Philippine cities entitled "Meeting the Challenge of Rural-to-Urban Mobilization and International Migration", presented as the 77th Edition of the Globalization Lecture Series (GLS), a regular program of the AIM Policy Center and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung that features international and local experts who share their knowledge and insights on issues that bear on competitiveness or on current economic, political and social concerns.
The said dialogue-consultation took place on June 4, 2008, 3:00-5:30 p.m. at the SGV Hall of the AIM Conference Center Manila. Mr. Francis G. Estrada, President of AIM welcomed an audience of over 120, composed of city mayors, representatives from various civil society organizations, and the academe. He was followed by Mayor Alfonso Casurra, Executive Vice President of the League of Cities of the Philippines, who imparted the opening address. HRH Prince Constantijn delivered the keynote address. After, three Metro Manila city mayors shared their city's experiences on in- and out-migration. They were Mayor Marides Carlos-Fernando of Marikina City, Mayor Sonny Belmonte of Quezon City and Mayor Sigfrido Tinga of Taguig City.
Mayor Jesse Robredo of Naga City and Professor Mary Lou Alcid of the College of Social Work and Community Development of the University of the Philippines gave their reactions to the keynote address and the three mayors' presentations and later on the floor was opened for questions from the audience. Finally, Dr. Federico M. Macaranas, Executive Director of the AIM Policy Center gave a synthesis of the entire programme and brought it to a close. Professor Tomas Lopez, also from the Institute, acted as master of ceremonies.
