Global Competitiveness Program
The Global Competitiveness Program (GCP) seeks primarily to promote the competitiveness of Philippine industries, the Philippine economy, as well as other Asian economies by monitoring the global trends and performance of particular sectors, identifying drivers and bottlenecks to their competitiveness, and providing policy solutions to specific industry problems.
This objective is achieved through:
- focused research and consistent monitoring of global trends;
- identification of drivers and bottlenecks at the national level, and in specific Philippine industries;
- dissemination of the information gathered through research and monitoring;
- crafting and recommendation of policy solutions to specific industry problems.
The flagship project of the Global Competitiveness Program is its involvement, since 1997, in the data-gathering - but more importantly, the utilization of the findings - of the World Competitiveness Report, an annual country-competitiveness survey and ranking undertaken by the Swiss-based International Institute for Management Development (IIMD). The survey results are presented in the World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY), an internationally-recognized benchmark by which countries can gauge their performance vis-a-vis other economies.
In line with the annual World Competitiveness Report, the Center has been undertaking yearly State of Philippine Competitiveness (SPC) conferences. Initially, this gathering aimed at briefing members of the Philippine government on the country's ranking and performance in the WCY. Eventually, however, this expanded into an annual Philippine competitiveness conference participated in not only by government, but by business and civil society leaders - all stakeholders and actors affecting the landscape of the country's global competitiveness.
Through its involvement in the production of the WCY, the AIM Policy Center has been able to access vital information - which it in turn makes available to the academic community, to policy makers and to stakeholders in the development of industries - for their study and analyses, leading to the crafting of relevant policies and solutions.
The most notable impact of the activity of the Global Competitiveness Program has been the projection of the AIM Policy Center into the national consciousness as a lead player in the national drive for competitiveness. This was especially highlighted in the Center's involvement in the first National Competitiveness Summit, held in 2006, and eventual participation in the Task Force on Competitiveness, now the National Competitiveness Council.
