A Lecture on Renewable Energy
by Mr. Terrence O'Brien of the California Energy Commission
Last 30 July 2008, the AIM Policy Center, in partnership with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Embassy of the United States of America in the Philippines, hosted a lecture by Mr. Terrence O' Brien, Deputy Director of the California Energy Commission. His lecture, entitled "Shaping California's Energy Future: Protecting the Economy and the Environment, presented how the California Energy Commission helped introduce reforms (e.g. appliance standard) and new policies (e.g. renewable portfolio standard, net metering) that have profoundly affected the efficiency and positive environmental impact of energy use in California state. He stressed that the following guiding principles of these reforms are as follows:
- energy efficiency and conservation are the most economically and environmentally beneficial ways to meet energy demands,
- the new future of energy sector calls for moving towards renewable sources of energy,
- there is a need to think of long-term solutions to energy-related problems.
Bureau Director Mario Marasigan of the Department of Energy followed Mr. O'Brien's lecture with a brief discussion on how California's experience is relevant to the Philippines' experience on Renewable Energy, particularly the Renewable Energy bill (HB 4139) which has been passed in the lower house of Congress and is awaiting its passage in the Senate.
