Mobilizing Unified Strategies for Trade Negotiations and the Need for a Philippine Trade Representative Office
The advocacy of multi-sectoral groups on the matter of Philippine capacity for negotiations in international trade has reached fever-pitch with the Trade Advocacy Group (TAG) successfully galvanizing support in the House of Representatives for the creation of a Philippine Trade Representative Office (PTRO). This proposed office tracks and models the powers and functions of the US Trade Representative Office.
As part of the AIM Policy Center’s interest in creating multi-sectoral dialogues in the area of international relations that affect business interests, it is pleased to invite you, together with the TAG, to a public forum, “Mobilizing Unified Strategies for Trade Negotiations and the Need for a Philippine Trade Representative Office” on 01 June 2009, 12:30pm to 4:00pm at SGV Hall, 3/F AIM Conference Center Manila, Benavidez cor. Trasierra Sts., Legaspi Village, Makati City.
Some of the key questions that will be discussed are: (1) What needs are sought to be addressed by the proposed PTRO? (2) What conditions and assumptions are it based on? (3) To what extend can it coordinate, harmonize and unify approaches to trade policy? (4) What are the accountability frameworks that the PTRO must resonate with? (5) What information, research, training and consultation requirements is it intended to address? (6) On the other hand, what are the existing capabilities within government and within the public-private sphere in the area of international trade negotiations? (6) What are the lessons that can be gleaned from Philippine trade negotiation and litigation experiences relevant to building institutional capacities?
We look forward to your participation to this forum. The event is free of charge. To confirm attendance or for any question on this forum, kindly contact Ms. Vanessa Peralta or Ms. Ivyrose Baysic at 892-4011 loc. 2108/2109 or email to vperalta@aim.edu / ibaysic@aim.edu
