The Auto Industry’s Competitiveness in the Context of International Economic Partnership Agreements
Since the Martial Law years, the Philippine government had attempted to develop fully our ability to manufacture or at least assemble motor vehicles – with varying success. While relatively new players in the global market, such as South Korea, China, India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia had done well, our country’s performance leaves much to be desired.
The ability of both developed and developing countries to serve the automotive needs of foreign markets, as well as the desire of countries like the Philippines to nurture its automotive industry in the face of both foreign competition in the domestic market as well as opportunities in foreign markets, impact on the trade policy conduct of the different countries.
Thus, there should be sufficient avenues for the Philippine auto industry, including the labor unions within the industry, to engage the government on both trade policy formulation and trade policy negotiation.
The Asian Institute of Management in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment Through Alternative Legal Services (IDEALS) will hold a forum entitled The Auto Industry’s Competitiveness in the Context of International Economic Partnership Agreements. The forum is scheduled on December 10, 2009 from 12:00 nn to 4:00 pm at E-Library, 2/F AIM Conference Center Manila, Benavidez cor. Trasierra Sts., Legaspi Village, Makati City.
This forum primarily aims to solicit policy recommendations and specific measures that the government could adopt to enhance the competitiveness of the entire automotive industry when dealing with trade and investment agreements.
